A Quick Post-Divorce Checklist

We often write about the process of divorce in Australia, but there aren’t as many resources online that can help you with what to do once you’ve finalized your divorce. Even with the best family lawyers on your side, getting a divorce can be stressful, and many people look forward to the day where everything is finalized. Unfortunately, there are still a few things you’ll need to sort out post-divorce. So, here’s a quick checklist from Umbrella Family Law.

Without a doubt, getting a divorce can be one of the most stressful experiences someone goes through. Between choosing the family lawyers, finalizing legal aspects, organizing parenting agreements and property settlements, many people look forward to no longer having to do so much admin. Unfortunately, there are still a few legal and financial details you’ll need to organize once your divorce is finalized.

Copy & File Your Documents

Make sure you keep your original divorce order and copies in a secure spot. Other important documents you should keep together include:

  • Property Titles
  • Vehicle Registrations
  • Insurance Policies
  • Birth Certificates

It’s also recommended to keep a digital copy of all these documents, should any loss or damage occur.

Change Your Name

Where applicable, you can now revert back to your maiden name. While it’s not a legal requirement, many people choose to do so. To change your name, you will need to apply to do so with the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages in your state or territory.

Update Your Major Documents

A step that’s lots of people tend to forget. However, if you do change your surname, you need to make sure all your vital documents are changed. These documents include:

  • Driver’s License
  • ID Documents
  • Passports
  • Health Insurance Cards
  • Bank Cards

Get Your Insurance In Order

You need to notify all of your insurance providers of the change in your marital status. This includes:

  • House & Content Insurance
  • Updating Car Insurance
  • Renewing or Updating Health & Life Insurance

Update Your Will

It’s so important to update your will post-divorce. Be sure to change the executor and beneficiaries where applicable. You’ll also need to update your power of attorney.

Contact Important Service Providers

It’s also a good idea to notify certain service providers where your divorce information will be relevant. This includes:

  • Your children’s school.
  • Family GP.
  • Membership and Loyalty Programs.
  • Utility Providers.

Update Your Passwords

While this may sound like a bit of a hassle, it’s always a good idea to change up your passwords and keep your data protected. Significant passwords to change include:

  • Social Media Accounts
  • Email Accounts
  • Online Banking Accounts
  • Phone & Computer Passwords
